Many people are not familiar with what proofreading is.

It is more than checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation issues.

It also amends:

  • Homonyms.

  • Incorrectly capitalised words.

  • Flags missing/extra words and raises appropriate author queries.

  • It ensures consistency of style and formatting.

  • It will, where appropriate, read to a given style guide.

  • It will also check proper nouns, place names, media titles, and the correct presentation of official titles, business and organisation names including styling of acronyms, and check any links or telephone numbers.

However, other than correcting basic issues, proofreading does not involve editing the text.

The proofreading service is particularly suited to:

Writing that must be substantially the author's own words e.g. essays, dissertations, and statements.

Work that has been through several rounds of editing.

I will:

I

  • Perform two passes on your document and accept one return.

  • Develop and keep an updated style sheet for your reference.

  • Using the comments function, I will make explanatory notes upon corrections and raise appropriate author queries.

  • Provide an editorial letter expanding upon the notes.

  • Return a marked-up copy of the document and a clean copy with all changes accepted for your review.

I am available for phone or video consultations by arrangement throughout.

Copy Editing

Level 1 Editing

£32 per hour

Word count based packages:

10k words £135

20k words £265

50k words £640

Otherwise known as a light touch edit it is often confused with proofreading. Copy editing encompasses proofreading checks, but leans toward polishing and improving the text. Copy editing will also address matters such as:

  • Grammar and syntax issues.

  • Wordiness.

  • Missing words.

  • Misused words.

  • Clarity issues.

It will: apply a given style guide and, where appropriate, verify quotes, check sources, check facts as presented, and flag any potential concerns.

Its purpose is to polish your near finished MS and elevate it to traditional publishing quality. Copy editing focuses on how the content as presented can be refined on a sentence-by-sentence basis. While it will make amendments for clarity, it does not rewrite to improve flow or clear up poorly organised information.

A copy edit is particularly suited to work that has undergone revision to the point you are happy with its content and structure and are in the final stages of preparing your MS for publication or submission.

I will:

  • Perform two passes on your document and accept one return.

  • Develop and keep an updated style sheet for your reference.

  • Using the comments function, I will make explanatory notes upon edits and raise appropriate author queries.

  • Provide a detailed feedback document expanding upon the notes.

  • Return a marked-up copy of the document and a clean copy with all changes accepted for your review.

I am available for phone or video consultations by arrangement throughout.

Line Editing

Level 2 Editing.

£35 per hour

Word count based packages:

10k words £225
20k words £445
50k words £1050

This is a deeper edit that involves more substantial revision of the writing. It is intended to improve flow, readability, and clarity. As well as addressing some of the issues a copy edit would amend, a line edit may:

  • Break up or condense longer sentences to enhance readability.

  • Restructure sentences to enhance clarity and impact.

  • Eliminate repetition and unnecessary reiteration.

  • Ensure consistency of tone and voice.

  • Edit to reflect the pace of the scene.

  • Address issues such as passive voice.

  • Flag inconsistencies.

A line edit addresses the document on the sentence level and does not concern itself with the overall structure.

Please note - whilst a line edit will also address many of the same issues copy editing does, and some of the issues proofreading is designed to catch, it is neither service. For best practice, the document will benefit from further revision.

I will:

  • Perform two passes on your document and accept one return.

  • Develop and keep an updated style sheet for your reference.

  • Using the comments function, I will make explanatory notes upon edits made and raise appropriate author queries.

  • Provide a detailed feedback document expanding upon the notes.

  • Return a marked-up copy of the document and a clean copy with all changes accepted for your review.
